Expert players often like to play CROSS HARP STYLE, enabling them to play in a different key from the same harp. Many claim it gives new possibilities and can feel better to play this way.

The picture above shows you how you get a G scale froma C harp in this way (Draw notes are in small letters).

By starting from the third or the sixth hole you can produce another scale, and therefore play in a different key than the one the harp was designed for.

Obviously this can be unsettling at first and is not for the beginner player!

WHAT CROSS HARP KEY DO I NEED?

To understand the diagram below you only need to follow the key names shown below the music, the rest is there for those who like musical explanations.

Simply use the harp in the key immediately to the left of the one you actually want to play in for cross harp style playing

This is because you do not actually need the extra sharp for the kind of blues or rock music you are likely to be playing

The diagram shows that you are using the harp in the key with one fewer sharps, or if in C, F or a key with a flat in the name (e,g, e flat) you might need one more flat than you thought!

For example to play in D cross harp style you can use a G harmonica, to play in flat you can use a D FLAT.

Playing in Minor Keys
We stock the brilliant Lee Oscar Harps which are made in minor keys, but if you have n`t got one handy try this.

Use a normal major key harp and play from the 6th. hole draw upwards using the harps shown to make the key in brackets.
C (a minor) - G (E minor) - D (B minor) - A (F sharp minor) - E (C sharp minor) - F (D minor) - B flat (G minor) - E flat (C minor) - A flat (F minor) - D flat (B flat minor).

On second thoughts, maybe you should just come and get a proper Lee Oscar minor key harp!
